Ohsweken, community in Ontario, Canada
Ohsweken is a small rural settlement in Ontario, Canada, that serves as the administrative and community center of the Six Nations. It consists of scattered homes, local shops, and facilities such as the Gaylord Powless Arena and the Ohsweken Speedway.
Jasper Tough Gilkison built a council building in Ohsweken in 1856, and the settlement grew around it from that point. The Six Nations Confederacy had already been holding council meetings at nearby sites since the early 1800s before this building was established.
Ohsweken is known as the center of Six Nations community life, where traditional ceremonies and powwows can still be attended today. The Champion of Champions Pow Wow, held since 1979, draws visitors from across the region and offers dancing, drumming, and storytelling.
Getting around is easiest by car, as public transport options are limited in this rural area. Visitors who want to attend a powwow or local event should check the community calendar in advance.
Ohsweken is the birthplace of Jay Silverheels, who became known for playing Tonto in Western films, and actor Graham Greene. Both came from this small rural community and went on to appear in well-known North American productions.
