Ottawa Normal School
Ottawa Normal School, Teacher training institution at Elgin Street, Ottawa, Canada.
Ottawa Normal School is a teacher training building on Elgin Street constructed during the 1870s as Ontario's second pedagogical institute. Its exterior displays a blend of Gothic pointed windows, Romanesque columns, and a Second Empire roof topped with a peaked belfry.
The building rose during the 1870s in response to Ontario's growing need for trained educators. After more than a century of operation as a training institution, it transitioned in 1974 to serve as part of municipal government offices.
For over a century, the building served as the training ground where teachers learned their craft before spreading across Ontario. You can sense the weight of educational tradition in its hallways and rooms.
The building sits at 195 Elgin Street in downtown Ottawa and is easy to find. Since it now functions as a government office, public access to interiors is limited, but the striking exterior can be viewed from the street.
The structure blends Gothic, Italianate, and Romanesque styles into one building rather than following a single architectural approach. This layered aesthetic choice reflects the design preferences of the era.
