Ottawa City Hall is a municipal administration building featuring two connected sections, with a contemporary wing along Laurier Avenue and a heritage-style structure on Elgin Street. Functional public spaces run between them, creating a connected composition that merges both parts.

The building was completed in 1990, replacing earlier structures at a site with military heritage. The location had previously housed temporary buildings during World War II that accommodated military personnel.

The plaza in front of the Laurier Avenue wing hosts concerts, festivals and community events, and holds a sound sculpture and a fountain. Veterans' Grove, named on 5 November 1998 by Mayor Bob Chiarelli, stands beside the building and contains a pink granite memorial to Ottawans who enlisted for the Canadian Army Special Force in Korea, unveiled on 27 July 1994 on Sussex Drive.

The building is centrally located and easy to reach on foot, with the main entrance at 110 Laurier Avenue West. Visitors can walk through public areas during regular hours and ask for information about city services at available counters.

The rink in front of City Hall is the Sens Rink of Dreams, funded since 2013 by the Ottawa Senators Foundation. It covers 12,500 square feet (1,160 m2) and is open from December to March, weather permitting. LED lights are mounted in the boards for night skating, and a BeaverTails trailer stands on site.
