CFS Senneterre, Military radar station on Mount Bell near Senneterre, Canada
CFS Senneterre is a military radar station situated on Mount Bell near the town of Senneterre in Quebec. The facility consisted of multiple structures and radar installations spread across the elevated terrain to monitor airspace over northern Canada.
The station opened in 1953 as RCAF Station Senneterre as part of the Pinetree Line radar network that supported Cold War airspace defense across northern regions. Operations continued until 1988 when changing defense priorities led to its closure.
The station personnel maintained strong connections with local communities while conducting essential military operations and participating in regional search and rescue missions.
The site today offers limited access as most original structures are largely abandoned or repurposed. Visitors should explore only from public land and respect any fencing or closures that may protect the remaining buildings.
The station was designed to serve as a backup command center and could assume control if nuclear strikes targeted the main command facility at North Bay. This critical role made it an essential part of nuclear deterrence planning during the peak Cold War period.
