Mount Hanley Schoolhouse Museum, One-room schoolhouse museum in Mount Hanley, Annapolis County, Canada.
Mount Hanley Schoolhouse Museum is a small rural school building from the eighteen hundreds located in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. Inside, desks, blackboards, books, and everyday teaching items create a picture of how children once learned in a single room together.
The building was constructed in 1850 to replace an earlier wooden structure and served students until 1963 when rural schools began consolidating. A preservation society took over the property in the 2000s to maintain it as a museum.
The schoolhouse reflects the values of rural education where learning was woven into the rhythms of farming and community life. Visitors can observe how children from different ages learned together in a single shared space.
The museum opens to visitors during summer months and is run by a local community group. Best to check ahead since opening times can vary depending on volunteer availability and weather conditions.
Joshua Slocum, the first person to sail alone around the world, attended this school and received his early education here. Another student, Clara Belle Marshall, was among the first women in Canada to earn a university degree.
