Cape Enrage Lighthouse, Maritime signal station at Albert County, Canada
The Cape Enrage Lighthouse is a modest wooden and concrete structure perched on a high cliff overlooking the Bay of Fundy. From this exposed location, the 9.2-meter tower directs ships through the demanding waters and strong tidal movements of the bay.
The first square lighthouse in New Brunswick was built here in 1838, replacing an earlier structure that had been relocated from Partridge Island. This location was chosen to improve safety in one of the region's most treacherous waterways.
Students from Moncton rescued this abandoned lighthouse in 1993 and turned it into a visitor center dedicated to maritime heritage. Their effort shows how the site became a place where local history is kept alive through education.
The site opens for visitors from May through October with guided tours explaining the navigation systems and maritime operations. Wear sturdy shoes as the grounds sit on a cliff with uneven terrain and potentially slippery surfaces.
The name Cape Enrage comes from the violent currents generated by an underwater reef that dramatically shifts water patterns during high tide. This natural phenomenon shaped why sailors found this location so challenging and why a lighthouse became essential here.
