Fundy Biosphere Reserve, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in New Brunswick, Canada.
The Fundy Biosphere Reserve is a protected area along the Bay of Fundy coast and covers approximately 442,000 hectares stretching from St. Martins to Tantramar Marsh. It contains dense forests, expansive mudflats exposed and flooded by tides, and salt marsh ecosystems that shift appearance with the water cycle.
Local volunteers began a conservation initiative in 1999 that resulted in UNESCO recognition in 2007. This grassroots effort emerged from a recognition that the region needed formal protection and sustainable management to preserve its natural value.
The lands held deep significance for Mi'kmaq, Wolastoqiyik, and Passamaquoddy peoples who maintained their connection to these territories across centuries. This heritage continues to shape how people relate to and use the coastal and forest areas today.
Plan your visit by checking tidal schedules beforehand, as the extreme tides dramatically change the landscape throughout the day. Access to paths and natural areas is most practical during mid-tide periods when the terrain is more navigable.
The region shelters eight protected animal species and experiences one of Earth's largest tidal ranges. This dramatic daily shift in water levels creates unusual ecological conditions that develop nowhere else in the same way.
