Rwenzori Mountains, Mountain range at Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo border
The Rwenzori Mountains stretch along the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo with peaks exceeding 5000 meters. The range shows different vegetation zones from rainforest through bamboo groves to glaciers at the highest points.
European explorers reached these peaks only in the late 19th century, though ancient writings mentioned mountains in this area. The first documented ascent to the highest peak occurred in 1906.
The name Rwenzori comes from a regional language meaning rainmaker, fitting the frequent rainfall here. Visitors can see village communities where coffee and bananas grow on steep slopes.
The trails require solid mountain boots and waterproof clothing because conditions change between warm rainforest and cold high altitudes. Multi-day treks demand good physical preparation and acclimatization.
The range holds the last equatorial glaciers in Africa, though these are shrinking rapidly. Mist forests harbor rare plants like giant lobelias that grow only at these altitudes.
