Stockhorn, Mountain summit in Bern, Switzerland
Stockhorn is a mountain summit in the Swiss canton of Bern, reaching 2,190 meters (7,185 feet) and overlooking the pre-Alpine foothills and Lake Thun to the north. On clear days, the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau are visible to the south from the top.
Before tourism reached the area in the 19th century, the Stockhorn was mainly known to local herders who used the surrounding pastures in summer. A gondola line opened in 1956, allowing visitors to reach the upper section without the full climb on foot.
The Stockhorn is a familiar meeting point for walkers from the Bern area, who come here on weekends to follow the paths around the summit. The mountain's name refers to its shape, which resembles a staff or stick, a naming tradition common across many Swiss peaks.
The gondola from Erlenbach im Simmental runs in two sections and brings you close to the summit, where a short walk on rocky ground leads to the top. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the final path can be slippery when wet.
Just below the summit, two small lakes named Oberstockensee and Hinterstockensee sit at different elevations and are connected by underground channels. This hidden water system runs beneath the paths that most visitors walk without noticing anything unusual underfoot.
