Stockhornbahn, aerial tramway in Erlenbach im Simmental, Switzerland

The Stockhornbahn is an aerial cable car from Erlenbach im Simmental (725 m) via the Chrindi middle station (1642 m) to the summit station at 2139 m. From there, a 70-metre wheelchair-accessible tunnel, opened in 2013, leads to a panoramic viewing platform; the summit itself stands at 2190 m.

Max Born bought the Berghaus Stockhorn in 1953 and received the concession to build a cable car in 1955. The Luftseilbahn Erlenbach i. S. – Stockhorn AG was founded in 1963 with share capital of 3.1 million Swiss francs; the Von Roll line opened in two stages, the first section in 1968 and the second in 1969. After overindebtedness in 1971, a new Stockhornbahn AG was created in 1972 with the Berner Kantonalbank as majority shareholder, and in 2018 the first section was completely renewed for nearly 4 million francs.

The name Stockhorn refers to the mountain's horn-like peak above the station. Since 1975 the Panoramawanderweg from Gurnigel to the Stockhorn has led hikers along the ridge, and in 1985 a Blumenlehrpfad (flower trail) was opened, teaching visitors to identify alpine plants along the way.

The tramway operates year-round with regular service from early February through late December. Dress in layers and wear good shoes when visiting, as mountain weather can change quickly and conditions vary depending on the time of day and season.

The 2013 panorama platform just below the 2190 m summit is reached through a 70-metre tunnel that is wheelchair-accessible, so the viewing point can be used without the final climb. The first section of the cable car was completely renewed in 2018 for nearly 4 million Swiss francs, with new cabins, drives and station saddles.
