Nordend, Alpine summit in Monte Rosa massif, Italy
The Nordend peak rises to an elevation of 4,609 meters, forming the fourth highest point in the Monte Rosa group along the Swiss-Italian border.
The first mountaineers reached the summit on August 26, 1861, when F.T. and E.N. Buxton, J.J. Cowell, and guide Michel Payot completed their ascent.
The name Nordend reflects its geographical position as the northernmost peak of Monte Rosa, connecting Swiss and Italian alpine traditions through mountaineering.
Climbers typically begin their ascent from Monte Rosa Hut at 2,795 meters, starting at 2:00 AM to reach the summit via the Silbersattel passage.
The east face of Nordend presents technical climbing challenges with a combination of rock and ice terrain, making it less frequented than neighboring peaks.
