Birs, River in Jura region, Switzerland
The Birs is a river flowing approximately 73 kilometers through Switzerland, beginning near Col de Pierre Pertuis and joining the Rhine between Basel and Birsfelden. The waterway passes through several cantons, including Jura, Solothurn, and Basel-Stadt.
The river served as an energy source for settlements and industry from early times. A waterfall near Laufen powered industrial activities during the medieval period and beyond.
The river sustained communities along its path by powering mills and workshops that relied on its flow. This relationship between the waterway and human work still shapes how villages and towns are arranged today.
The lower section underwent restoration from concrete channels in 2004 and now features walking paths and natural areas between Basel and Birsfelden. These stretches offer easy access for strolling along the restored waterway.
The river begins as a complete waterway from its source, fed by an extensive underground river system. This subsurface network supplies substantial water volume right from its origin.
