Hinteri Egg, Mountain summit in Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland

Hinteri Egg is a Jura mountain in the municipality of Waldenburg, between the Waldenburg valley and the Reigoldswil valley. Its wooded summit reaches 1,168 m (Swisstopo spelling since 2012; until 2011 Hinteri Egg); a 2008 inscription marks it as the highest point of Basel-Landschaft. The slightly lower pre-summit Chellenchöpfli (1,157 m), about 200 m south, lies on the cantonal border and is open, with views over the Guldental and the Alps.

The summit lies in the municipality of Waldenburg, between the Waldenburg valley and the Reigoldswil valley. In 2008 its status as the highest point of Basel-Landschaft was marked with an inscription. Since 2012 Swisstopo has spelled the official name Hinderi Egg, replacing Hinteri Egg.

The summit lies in the Wasserfallen nature reserve, shared by the municipalities of Reigoldswil and Waldenburg. The name changed officially: Swisstopo has written "Hinderi Egg" since 2012, while "Hinteri Egg" was used until 2011. The Berggasthaus Hintere Wasserfallen, a mountain inn, stands about 700 metres southwest of the summit at the pass crossing toward Passwang.

The Hinderi Egg-Passwang ridge is covered by a network of marked hiking trails, and the pass crossing to Passwang lies just over 700 metres south-west of the summit, next to the Hintere Wasserfallen mountain inn. The saddle towards the Bilsteinberg (1,126 m) sits west of the Kellenberg farm at about 988 m. The whole area lies in the Wasserfallen nature reserve.

The wooded summit of the Hinteri Egg lies in the "Wasserfallen" nature reserve, shared by Reigoldswil and Waldenburg. About 200 metres south stands the pre-summit Chellenchöpfli (1,157 m), where the cantonal border with Solothurn runs; it is open and gives a wide view over the Guldental and the Alps. The summit itself is forested and offers no such view.
