Irchel, Mountain summit near Zurich, Switzerland
Irchel is a forested ridge in the canton of Zurich, rising north of the city and reaching its highest point at 694 meters. The plateau is covered with woodland and open meadows, and its northern slopes descend gradually toward the lower Zurich countryside.
The Irchel was settled as far back as Celtic times, as finds on the plateau suggest. In the medieval period, surrounding villages relied heavily on its forests for timber and grazing land.
The Irchel plateau is home to a large University of Zurich campus that sits directly within the forest and open land. Students and walkers share the same paths, giving the place an everyday mix of academic and outdoor life.
The Irchel is easy to reach from central Zurich by public transport, and several marked walking paths cross the plateau. The forest trails are generally flat and work well for a half-day outing in any season.
A nature reserve managed by the University of Zurich sits within the campus grounds on the plateau, protecting rare orchid species. Visitors walking through the area can find these plants growing just steps away from university buildings.
