Altes Schloss Teufen, Medieval castle in Freienstein-Teufen, Switzerland.
Altes Schloss Teufen is a medieval castle in Freienstein-Teufen, in the canton of Zurich, set on a rise above the village. The main building has stepped gables and is accompanied by an Orangerie on the same property.
The castle dates to the medieval period and from 1452 onward served as an administrative center under Zurich's authority. For over three centuries it was the seat of local justice and governance for the surrounding communities.
The castle's stepped gables are the most visible feature from the village below, giving Freienstein-Teufen a recognizable roofline. Visitors walking through the area can easily spot how the building stands apart from the surrounding houses in both size and form.
The castle sits above the village on raised ground, so reaching it requires a short uphill walk. The Orangerie can be booked for private events, and advance reservation is recommended.
Twice a year, judges traveled from the castle down to the village square for court sessions, following a path called the Heerensteg. That same path still connects the property to the village today.
