Altes Schloss Teufen, Medieval castle in Freienstein-Teufen, Switzerland.
Altes Schloss Teufen is a medieval castle in Freienstein-Teufen situated on elevated terrain with distinctive stepped gables. The complex includes an Orangerie and preserves the architectural expression of regional governance over several centuries.
The castle originated in the medieval period and became an administrative center from 1452 onwards under Zurich's authority. For more than three centuries it served as the hub for judicial authority and governance over surrounding communities.
The castle shapes the village character with its distinctive stepped gables and traditional Swiss design. Visitors can explore how local leadership was housed and how the building reflected the power structures of its time.
The Orangerie is available for private events from May through October with space for around 36 guests. Visitors are advised to book in advance and should consider the elevated location when planning their visit.
Court sessions took place twice yearly on the village square, with judges traveling from the castle along a historic pathway called Heerensteg. This route still connects the property to the village today and marks where judicial authority once moved through the community.
