Monte Generoso

Monte Generoso is an alpine summit rising to 1701 meters in Switzerland, with views of Lakes Lugano, Como, Varese, and Maggiore. The mountain has multiple hiking trails, a rack railway, and dining facilities at the top.

A rack railway has transported visitors from Capolago to the summit since the late 19th century. This railway opened the mountain to tourism and became a defining part of its story.

The Fiore di Pietra restaurant building, designed by Mario Botta in 2017, shows modern Swiss architecture at high altitude. This structure serves as a gathering place for visitors who reach the summit.

The mountain has hiking trails of varying difficulty and the rack railway operates from spring through autumn. Accommodation and dining options are available at the summit for visitors who want to stay longer.

The mountain is home to an observatory that allows astronomical observation of the night sky. The slopes also support a population of about 300 to 350 chamois that visitors may encounter while hiking.
