Galenstock, Mountain summit in Uri Alps, Switzerland
Galenstock is a mountain summit in the Uri Alps reaching 3,586 meters in height. It forms the natural border between the Swiss cantons of Uri and Valais in the central Alps.
The first recorded ascent took place in 1845 when Eduard Desor led a team including Daniel Dollfuss and several mountain guides to the summit. This marked the beginning of the mountain's climbing history.
The mountain towers over the Rhone Glacier, which marks the source of the Rhone River flowing through Switzerland and France to the Mediterranean Sea.
The mountain can be reached through various climbing routes from established base camps at higher elevations. Mountaineering conditions are best from June through September, though access and difficulty vary significantly depending on the season.
The mountain lies directly above the Rhone Glacier, where the famous Rhone River originates and begins its long journey toward the Mediterranean. This proximity connects the summit to the source of one of Europe's most important rivers.
