Herisau

Located at an elevation of 771 meters in northeastern Switzerland, Herisau extends across 25.2 square kilometers of agricultural lands and forested areas.

First documented in 837 as Herinisauva, the settlement endured significant changes including destructions in 1084 and fires in 1606, before emerging as a regional administrative center.

The German-speaking municipality maintains its Swiss heritage through traditional architecture and hosts regular community gatherings at locations like the historic town hall from 1601.

The municipality provides access through three railway stations and offers digital administrative services while maintaining essential infrastructure for its population of 15,744 residents.

The wastewater treatment facility generates 289 megawatt-hours of renewable energy through its solar folding roof system installed in 2023.
