Herisau

Herisau is the capital of canton Appenzell Ausserrhoden in northeastern Switzerland and sits at roughly 771 meters elevation. The settlement spreads across farmland and forest across about 25 square kilometers.

The settlement was first recorded in 837 as Herinisauva and suffered major destruction in 1084 plus a large fire in 1606. Over time it became an important administrative center for the region.
