Uster, Administrative center in Zurich Canton, Switzerland
Uster is a town in Zurich Canton that spreads across rural hills and forested areas. The town structure combines older neighborhoods around the church with newer residential areas that gradually expand eastward.
The first written mention as Ustra villa dates to 775 and documents an early medieval settlement. The nearby village of Riedikon was recorded about 30 years earlier, showing how the region was gradually populated.
The St. Andreas Church shapes the town center with its three-naved Romanesque design, still serving as the spiritual core of the community. Visitors notice the craftsmanship in stone and wood that reflects the area's medieval roots.
The main railway station connects directly to the Zurich S-Bahn network and makes day trips to the region convenient. Most shops cluster along the main street, and parking downtown can be tight during peak hours.
In 2001 the town received the Wakker Prize from the Swiss Heritage Foundation for successfully balancing growth with local character. This award recognizes how it managed to keep its identity while modernizing.
