Betten, Mountain municipality in Östlich Raron District, Switzerland.
Betten is a former municipality situated on a south-facing terrace between 1192 and 1203 meters above sea level in Valais. The village occupies an alpine landscape with meadows suitable for hiking and open views toward surrounding peaks.
The village first appears in records in 1243 under the name Bettan and developed as a mountain settlement over centuries. On January 1, 2014, it merged with Martisberg to form the new municipality of Bettmeralp.
The German-speaking community here observes Roman Catholic traditions that shape local celebrations and gatherings throughout the year. These customs form the foundation of how people come together in daily life.
The location connects to the region through Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn railway at Betten station, providing access to neighboring communities. The altitude and alpine terrain require sturdy footwear and layered clothing suited to changing weather throughout the year.
The protected hamlet of Eggen within the former territory holds special status in the Swiss Heritage Inventory. This small settlement displays traditional building styles and settlement patterns from earlier times.
