Rapperswil-Jona, Lake municipality in St. Gallen, Switzerland
Rapperswil-Jona is located along Lake Zurich's northern shore and combines two historic settlements into one town. The area features a medieval castle, extensive rose gardens, and a wooden pedestrian bridge that connects to the neighboring municipality of Hurden.
The region has been inhabited for thousands of years and contains archaeological traces of very early cultures. In 2007, Rapperswil and Jona merged to form a single municipality, which is now the second-largest town in the canton of St. Gallen.
Rapperswil Castle houses the Polish National Museum, where visitors can see historical artifacts and documents from Poland on display. This collection reflects a long-standing connection between the town and Polish heritage that remains visible today.
Four railway stations serve the area, with the main station at Rapperswil offering regular connections to Zurich and bus services throughout the region. The lakeside location and good transport links make it easy to explore different parts of town on foot or by public transport.
Beneath the lake lie prehistoric pile dwelling settlements recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites. These submerged villages reveal how people lived along the shores of Lake Zurich thousands of years ago.
