Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Research university in Lausanne, Switzerland
The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne is a technical university beside Lake Geneva with laboratories, research centers and lecture halls serving several thousand students. The grounds include buildings for computer science, architecture and different engineering disciplines, and house institutes for robotics and materials research.
The school was created in 1853 as a small engineering school and was taken over by the Swiss federal government in 1969. Since then it has grown into one of Europe's leading technical universities.
Students from over 130 nations participate in academic programs conducted in English and French, contributing to a multilingual learning environment.
The grounds sit on the western edge of town and can be reached by public transport or on foot from several stops. Many areas are accessible to visitors, although certain laboratories and research spaces have security restrictions.
A dedicated innovation park on the grounds helps graduates and instructors launch new technology businesses. Since the late 1990s roughly a dozen startups have emerged there each year on average.
