St. Andreas Castle, Medieval castle in Cham, Switzerland.
St. Andreas Castle is a Historicist-style castle on a small peninsula along the northern shore of Lake Zug, near Cham. It sits on a low hill within a large private park that separates it from the water's edge and the surrounding road.
The site was already occupied in Roman times, as objects found nearby confirm. Over the following centuries, it was gradually built up into the castle that stands today.
The name of the castle refers to Saint Andrew, to whom a small chapel on the grounds is also dedicated. That chapel is still used for religious services today, giving the site a living spiritual presence that visitors can sense even from outside.
The castle is privately owned and not open to visitors on most days. A few times a year the gates are opened, so checking ahead before planning a visit is the best approach.
The chapel on the grounds has been used for religious purposes without interruption since Roman times, a span of over a thousand years. This makes it one of the few places in the region where sacred use has never stopped, regardless of who owned the land above it.
