Altenklingen Castle

Altenklingen Castle is a Renaissance-style structure standing on a rise in Wigoltingen with three floors containing thirteen rooms. The property also features a separate chapel dedicated to Saint Wiborada located on the grounds.

The original fortress was built around 1200 by the Lords of Klingen and remained under their control until 1395. It then passed through multiple owners and was shaped by various noble families.

The castle served as a residence for noble families who shaped their lives within its walls over many generations. Visitors can sense how daily life unfolded here and what objects held meaning for those who lived there.

The castle is privately owned by the Zollikofer family and has limited wheelchair accessibility to certain areas. It is wise to check in advance which parts of the building can be visited.

The eastern defensive wall and corner towers were removed during the 19th century, transforming the fortress into a purely residential building. This change reveals how the site shifted from a military structure to a family home.
