Fletschhorn, Alpine summit in Valais, Switzerland
Fletschhorn is an Alpine summit located in the Walliser Alps, positioned between the Saas Valley and the Simplon Valley in southern Switzerland. The mountain rises prominently in this region where two major valleys converge below its slopes.
The mountain was first climbed in 1854 by Michael Amherdt with guides Johannes Zumkemmi and Friedrich Clausen. Its north face remained unclimbed until 1927, when a team finally reached this challenging section.
The mountain's measurement changed from 4,001 meters to 3,984.5 meters, leading local communities to consider modifying the summit during the 1980s.
Mountaineers use the Fletschhorn-Biwak shelter as a base for climbing attempts. Visitors need mountaineering experience and comfort with heights, so arriving fully equipped and well-prepared is essential for any attempt on this peak.
The north face of Fletschhorn remained unconquered until July 1927, when E. R. Blanchet and guides Oskar Supersaxo and Kaspar Mooser achieved the first ascent.
