Old hospice

This hospice is a rectangular stone building in one of the highest inhabited Alpine passes, serving travelers for centuries. The structure spans multiple levels and is arranged to house many guests at the same time.

This building was constructed in the early 1800s when an important mountain route between two countries was newly opened. Since then it has helped travelers cross the pass and remains a protected cultural monument today.

The religious community running this hospice has maintained a long tradition of welcoming people here. Visitors can see how this role still shapes daily life and the character of the place today.

This location is only easily reached during certain seasons, as heavy snow and ice can block the pass. Visitors should prepare for harsh conditions and bring sturdy shoes and warm clothing.

The building received electricity from a local water-powered system around 1906, which was remarkably early for a remote mountain location. This technical solution allowed operations to become more modern despite the isolated setting.
