Ganter Bridge, Cable-stayed bridge in Ried-Brig, Switzerland.
The Ganter Bridge is a cable-stayed structure made of reinforced concrete that spans 678 meters across a deep valley. Two main towers support the roadway with a central span of 174 meters designed to carry traffic across the alpine terrain.
Engineer Christian Menn designed this structure in the 1980s to connect northern and southern Switzerland via the Simplon Pass road. It represents advanced construction methods developed specifically to overcome the challenges of building across the Valais region.
The bridge holds status as a class B Swiss cultural property, representing a notable example of infrastructure development in the mountainous regions.
The structure can be explored on foot using the walkways or crossed by vehicle when traveling on the Simplon Pass road. The best viewpoints are near the valley access points where you can see the entire structure and its surroundings.
Triangular concrete walls rise above the roadway to house the stressed cables and shield the structure from wind loads and weather impacts. This design approach was innovative for its time and demonstrated new possibilities for mountain infrastructure projects.
