Simplon-Hospiz

Simplon-Hospiz is a stone hospice and mountain hut located at 1998 meters elevation in the Simplon Pass, featuring robust walls built from local stone.The structure was constructed using traditional alpine building methods suited to harsh mountain conditions and accommodates around 130 guests with sleeping areas, dining spaces, and a chapel.

The original idea for a hospice at Simplon emerged under Napoleon, whose road engineers started the project, though it was not completed until 1831.The delayed finish resulted from political changes after Napoleon lost power, leaving the work unfinished during his lifetime.

The hospice serves as a place where pilgrims and travelers gather, blending spiritual tradition with mountain hospitality in daily practice.Life here follows the rhythm of the seasons and mountains, shaped by the commitment of the Augustinian Canons who tend the community.

The site requires good physical preparation, as arrival involves steep, exposed roads whether on foot or by vehicle, and weather can change rapidly.It makes sense to bring warm clothing and sturdy footwear, as conditions can remain cool and windy even in summer months.

This hospice ranks as the largest of all Alpine pass shelters, continuing a long tradition of aid for travelers crossing this dangerous route.Many early guests were pilgrims journeying toward the shrine of Saint Bernard, not simply mountain walkers.
