Reichenstein Castle, Medieval castle in Arlesheim, Switzerland
Reichenstein Castle is a medieval hilltop fortress set on a wooded rocky ridge near Arlesheim, in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland. It has two main towers: a residential tower and a taller keep, both built from local stone and surrounded by forest.
The castle appears in written records for the first time in 1239, already belonging to the Reich von Reichenstein family. They held it for over five centuries before it changed hands in the early 1800s.
The name Reichenstein comes directly from the family that lived here for centuries and shaped the identity of this part of the Basel region. Walkers passing through the forest today still spot the tower rising above the trees, making it a natural landmark on local hiking routes.
The castle is not open year-round and only welcomes visitors on specific days, so checking ahead before making the trip is a good idea. The path up runs through forest on uneven ground, so solid footwear will make the walk more comfortable.
Reichenstein is one of four fortresses that once stood in a row along the Birseck slope, forming a defensive line together. Having so many fortified structures this close to each other is rare in Switzerland.
