Italian Switzerland, Geographic region in southern Switzerland

Italian Switzerland covers parts of Ticino and Grisons cantons, where mountain valleys, lakes and Mediterranean-influenced landscapes stretch between the central Alps and the border with Italy. The region shows a mix of Alpine terrain and southern vegetation, with vineyards, chestnut groves and stone-built villages scattered along lakeshores and hillsides.

This region once belonged to Lombard and Roman territories before joining the Swiss Confederation through military campaigns during the 15th century. The transition brought new political structures, while Romansh and Italian influences in language and architecture remain visible today.

Residents here speak Italian in their daily lives, a presence you notice in street signs, shop names and the local dialect that sets this region apart from areas to the north. Cafés along town squares serve espresso and grappa in the southern manner, while markets offer fresh polenta, risotto and regional wines that form part of the everyday meal.

Visitors reach the region by rail lines and Alpine passes that remain open throughout the year, though some higher routes may close briefly in winter. Walking paths and lakeside promenades offer direct access to lakes and valleys, while smaller towns connect well by public transport or car.

Bregaglia is the only municipality in Switzerland where most Italian speakers follow Protestant practices rather than Catholic traditions, setting it apart from neighboring areas. This religious difference shows today in the architecture of churches and local traditions that recall Reformed customs.
