Artilleriewerk Jaunpass, Military fortress in Jaunpass, Switzerland
Artilleriewerk Jaunpass is a military fortress in a mountain pass in the Bern region with eight artillery bunkers designed to look like alpine huts. The bunkers sit on either side of the pass road and blend into the mountainside.
The fortress was built between 1711 and 1718 in two phases and formed part of Switzerland's defensive network. It was constructed during a period when European political tensions were rising.
The fortress represents Switzerland's commitment to military preparedness while maintaining neutrality through strategic defensive positions in mountainous regions.
Access to the fortress is restricted and visitors should contact local authorities well ahead of any visit. Certain sections require special permission and advance arrangements.
Each bunker operated as an independent unit with its own firing power while remaining connected to the central command post through cable systems. This design allowed defensive operations across the whole site without relying on a single location.
