Blankenburg Castle with castle barn, Medieval castle complex in Zweisimmen, Switzerland

Blankenburg Castle is an L-shaped castle complex in Zweisimmen with a two-story main building and a single-story wing, situated at 979 meters elevation in the Bern canton. The site also includes a castle barn and forms a cohesive architectural ensemble of connected structures.

The castle was first documented in 1329 under the Freiherren von Weissenburg and experienced major reconstruction in 1767 following a fire that destroyed its original medieval structure. These events shaped its current appearance and show how the site endured through different periods.

The castle's double covered staircase mirrors the architectural design of the Bern Town Hall, reflecting regional building traditions. This design shows how local styles reappear across different important structures in the area.

The property now functions as a meeting and reception center with restaurant facilities, having been converted by a community group from 2012 onward. Visitors should check opening hours and available offerings in advance to ensure their preferred activities are available.

The castle served as the administrative center of the Obersimmental district from 1386 until 2009, holding important governmental functions across centuries. This long role demonstrates how a single location could shape the political identity of an entire region.
