AW San Carlo

San Carlo is a military fortress carved into the mountainside near Airolo in the Swiss Alps. It combines hundreds of meters of tunnels with large chambers hollowed into the rock to house troops and equipment.

Switzerland built this installation during the late 1930s as it strengthened its border defenses and sought to protect its neutrality. The fortress served as both a command center and shelter throughout World War II.

The fortress shows how Switzerland prepared to defend its mountain passes against potential invasion during wartime. Walking through the underground chambers today reveals the practical concerns that shaped this structure.

The site now operates as a hotel, so visitors can sleep within the underground chambers if they wish. The best time to visit is from May through September when mountain access is easiest and weather is most favorable.

The fortress sits entirely within the mountain, so visitors see almost no signs of the outside world while exploring inside. This complete isolation underground creates an unusual quiet that feels separated from time.
