Description
San Carlo is a military fortress carved into the mountainside near Airolo in the Swiss Alps. It combines hundreds of meters of tunnels with large chambers hollowed into the rock to house troops and equipment.

Switzerland built this installation during the late 1930s as it strengthened its border defenses and sought to protect its neutrality. The fortress served as both a command center and shelter throughout World War II.
