Festungsgebiet Gotthard, Military fortification in Gotthard Pass, Switzerland
Festungsgebiet Gotthard is a military fortification built into the mountain ranges of the Swiss Alps, featuring numerous tunnels and underground installations. The structures extend across multiple levels within the mountain formation and create an extensive network of defensive buildings.
Construction of this defensive complex began in the late 1800s as part of Switzerland's National Redoubt strategy to protect routes between northern and southern Europe. The fortress was expanded and modernized over decades to meet changing military requirements.
The fortress represents Swiss determination to maintain independence through an extensive network of defensive structures integrated into the Alpine landscape. Visitors can see how these fortifications shape the terrain and reflect the strategic importance of this region.
The fortress is open for visits only during summer months from June to October when guided tours are available. Visitors can reach the fortress easily via the Postbus stop 'Gotthard, Passhöhe' and find free parking just a short walk from the entrance.
The fortress remained under military secrecy until recent years, with many of its functions unknown to the public for a long time. Only with changes in security policy were parts of the installation opened to visitors.
