The Lohnhof stands on Kohlenberg street in Basel's old town, featuring multiple connected structures with architectural elements from different periods.
Built in 1206 as an Augustinian canon, the complex received its name in 1668 from its function as a payment office for construction workers.
The building now houses a musical instrument museum, designed by Morger & Degelo architects, along with a small theater and jazz club.
Visitors can access the complex through the main entrance at Kohlenberg 20, where the hotel Au Violon occupies part of the former prison space.
The gatehouse section of the Lohnhof currently functions as a day care center, marking a transformation from its previous role in the justice system.
