Stadtcasino Basel, Concert hall in Basel, Switzerland
Stadtcasino Basel is a concert hall in the heart of Basel's city center, with a large main Music Hall and a smaller Hans Huber-Saal. The main hall was given a new wooden acoustic shell during a renovation completed in 2020 and is now considered one of the best-sounding halls in Europe.
The building opened in 1876, designed by architect Johann Jakob Stehlin the Younger, replacing an earlier structure by Melchior Berri. It remained the center of Basel's concert life for well over a century before being fully renovated between 2018 and 2020.
The name "Casino" here has nothing to do with gambling; in older German usage, the word simply meant a social house, a place to gather and make music. Today, locals come here for concerts of all kinds, from classical programs to jazz evenings, keeping that social spirit alive.
The hall sits in Basel's city center, within about a 15-minute walk from the main train station, making it easy to reach on foot. Checking the program in advance is helpful, as events can take place simultaneously in the main hall and the smaller Hans Huber-Saal.
For the 2020 renovation, the entire interior of the main hall was dismantled and rebuilt to improve acoustics, while the building's historic outer shell was left untouched. The new wooden interior structure floats acoustically independent from the outer walls, which is rarely done in halls of this size.
