Capanna Buffalora, Mountain hut in Grisons, Switzerland
Capanna Buffalora is a mountain hut in Grisons located at 2078 meters elevation below Pass de Buffalora. It provides overnight accommodation for hikers traveling through the high-altitude trail network in this region.
The original structure was built in 1981 but was destroyed by an avalanche in 1985. A new building was constructed in 1987 on a safer location to protect visitors from similar incidents.
The hut serves as a gathering point for hikers exploring the remote Calanca valleys and passes, connecting visitors to the region's mountain traditions. It reflects how locals and travelers use the landscape for movement and exploration across these high-altitude routes.
Visitors should confirm their arrival the day before and bring a sleeping bag, as the hut provides only basic bedding. The facility is accessible from multiple starting points, including a three-hour hike from Rossa.
This is the only staffed mountain shelter throughout Val Calanca, making it a rare spot for supplies and social exchange in this isolated region. With five rooms accommodating up to thirty people and a separate family building, it stands apart from other less-equipped shelters nearby.
