Bernegg Castle, Graubünden, Medieval castle ruin in Calfreisen, Switzerland
Bernegg Castle is a medieval ruin perched on a hill south of Calfreisen village. The rectangular stone tower features walls measuring approximately 11 by 13 meters, with several narrow openings designed for archers.
The castle was first recorded in 1231 as a residence for the Lords of Calfreisen, who served the barons of Vaz. Ownership changed when the von Sprecher family acquired it in 1428, marking a shift in the site's local significance.
The structure served as a seat of power for the von Sprecher family, who shaped local authority in the region. The name Bernegg reflects the site's importance to regional governance and remains part of the local identity.
The ruins are reachable by a short walk of about five minutes from Calfreisen village. The path is straightforward on foot and works best to visit during dry weather conditions.
An arrow slit on the south wall was later enlarged into a doorway to allow visitor access to the ruins. This adaptation shows how the site was modified over time for different purposes.
