Ehrenfels Castle

Ehrenfels Castle is a medieval ruin positioned at 761 meters above sea level, commanding views across the Domleschg valley with its stone walls and defensive towers. The structure retains characteristic features of a fortified stronghold, including intact walls, tower remnants, and interior chambers that are protected as a cultural monument.

Construction began in the early 13th century, with the first documented record of its rulers appearing in 1257. The fortress changed hands among different noble families throughout the medieval period before experiencing modern transformation.

The castle reflects how feudal lords shaped this mountain region and controlled the valley below through their stronghold. Walking through its rooms, visitors can sense how this place once served as both home and fortress for successive families.

The castle now operates as a youth hostel offering overnight accommodation for visitors and hikers in the region. The approach involves steep mountain paths, so sturdy footwear and reasonable fitness are needed to reach the site.

Major renovations in the 1930s transformed the structure into a youth hostel without formal archaeological study, leaving gaps in understanding how it was originally built and lived in. This conversion erased important details that might have revealed more about daily life within its walls.
