Baldenstein Castle, Medieval castle in Sils im Domleschg, Switzerland
Baldenstein is a medieval castle perched on steep banks of the Albula River and built with thick stone walls reaching 2.1 meters in thickness. A four-story tower forms the focal point and anchors the structure visually.
The castle first appeared in written records in 1246 when Ebo von Baldenstein was noted as its lord. Over the centuries, the building changed hands and underwent various modifications to its structure.
The interior features a grand hall with stucco decorations and ceiling paintings showing allegorical figures. These artistic details reflect the craftsmanship and taste of past centuries and shape how the rooms feel today.
The castle serves as a private residence and is not open to the public for interior visits. The best way to see it is from the Domleschg Castle Trail, which offers views from outside.
A devastating fire in 1877 caused significant damage to much of the structure. The reconstruction that followed shaped what visitors see on the building today.
