La Serra

La Serra is a castle ruin perched high above the Albula Valley in Grisons, with stone walls divided into different levels and views across the surrounding mountains. The remaining walls indicate what was once a larger complex with several building sections.

The lords of Vaz built the fortress in 1230 as their residence and expanded it later with additional floors and a large hall. Habsburg troops controlled the fortress until forces from Grisons destroyed it in 1499 during regional conflicts.

The site once housed the Vaz family, whose members wielded power and made decisions throughout the region. The ruins today still show the foundations and walls that testify to their position of authority.

The walk to the ruins takes about 15 minutes from the parking area or only 5 minutes from the Brienz/Brinzauls bus stop, offering several access options. The route is easy to follow, but it is wise to wear sturdy shoes and exercise caution in wet weather.

The site was once the scene of fierce regional power struggles between different noble families and the church that controlled the territory. These conflicts eventually led to the fortress's destruction, making it a vivid testament to these medieval rivalries.
