Wirzweli, Ski resort in Dallenwil, Switzerland.
Wirzweli is a small car-free hamlet and ski resort in the Nidwalden Alps, sitting above the village of Dallenwil. The slopes are gentle to moderate and aimed at beginners and families, with a gondola as the only link to the valley below.
Wirzweli started as a small farming and alpine grazing community perched on the mountain above Dallenwil. During the 20th century, the construction of the gondola opened the hamlet to winter tourism and gradually shifted its main activity.
Wirzweli is a car-free hamlet, and that absence of traffic gives the place a character you notice the moment you step off the gondola. The handful of buildings, including small hotels and a restaurant, follow a traditional Swiss alpine style that fits naturally into the mountain setting.
The gondola from Dallenwil is the only way to reach Wirzweli, since the area is closed to private vehicles. Arriving early in the day is a good idea, especially on weekends and during school holidays when the cabins fill up.
Despite being a small resort, Wirzweli offers overnight accommodation directly on the mountain, which is rare for a place of its size in this region. Guests who stay the night experience the site after the lifts close in complete quiet, with no passing traffic of any kind.
