Canton of Nidwalden

Nidwalden is a canton in Central Switzerland that stretches between Lake Lucerne and the Alps, encompassing eleven municipalities. The region connects flat lakeside areas with steep mountain zones, with Stans serving as the administrative center.

The region was one of the founding places of Switzerland when it joined with Uri and Schwyz in 1291. This alliance formed the foundation for the Swiss state as we know it today.

A hidden pilgrimage site exists in Maria-Rickenbach, where a shepherd once discovered a Gothic Madonna statue inside a maple tree. This unusual discovery location has made the place a pilgrimage destination for visitors from across the region.
