Bannalpsee, Swiss reservoir
Bannalpsee is a mountain lake at about 1587 meters elevation in the Swiss Alps, surrounded by steep slopes and green meadows. The clear water reflects the surrounding peaks and appears especially still in early morning hours.
The lake is a natural part of the Bannalp landscape and now serves as a reservoir controlling water flow in the region. The water supplies a small hydroelectric plant operated by the local electricity company and has long supported farming operations.
The Bannalp region reflects traditions of mountain farming visible in small farms and huts around the lake. Visitors experience this living culture in summer when green meadows and simple mountain buildings fill the valley.
You can reach the lake easily by cable car from Oberrickenbach, followed by about an hour walk to the shore. Picnic areas with tables and benches are available around the lake, and a mountain inn nearby offers snacks and drinks.
On still mornings with clear water, visitors can see reflections of mountain peaks that resemble paintings. This optical effect occurs because of the lake's exceptional stillness and the clear air quality at this elevation.
