Brisen, Mountain peak in Central Switzerland.
Brisen is a 2404-meter peak located between the cantons of Uri and Nidwalden, with steep slopes on most sides. Its western ridge, known as Haldigrat, rises prominently and serves as a natural boundary between the two regions.
The mountain became known to mountaineers in the late 1800s when systematic exploration of the Alps increased across the region. This period of discovery transformed it into a recognized climbing destination.
Shepherds have used the lower slopes for grazing livestock for centuries, and you can still see sheep and goats roaming there today. This pastoral tradition shapes how the mountain looks and connects to the farming communities living in the valleys below.
You can reach the summit via a T3-rated trail starting from Berggasthaus Haldigrat, and you will need proper mountain gear. Plan your visit for clear weather when conditions are stable, as the exposed ridges demand good visibility and caution.
The summit sits exactly on the border between Uri and Nidwalden, allowing you to see both cantons from the top at the same time. This boundary location makes it a special vantage point where two Swiss regions are visible in a single view.
