Schwalmis, Mountain summit at Uri and Nidwalden, Switzerland
Schwalmis is a mountain peak straddling the cantons of Uri and Nidwalden, rising to 2,246 meters in elevation. The Uri side features grassy slopes, while the Nidwalden side shows rocky outcrops and stone formations.
The peak became a popular destination through the development of marked hiking trails in the 20th century for climbers in the region. The Swiss Alpine Club played a key role in establishing this trail network.
Hikers from nearby valleys regularly make their way up Schwalmis to spend time in the mountain landscape. The peak serves as a meeting point where visitors experience the outdoor traditions of central Switzerland.
The ascent from Gitschenen follows marked trails and takes roughly 2 to 2 hours 15 minutes, with straightforward to moderate difficulty. Good footwear and weather protection are essential since conditions at the summit can shift quickly.
The mountain displays a striking geological split, with each side showing completely different rock types and landscape shapes. This contrast was created by its position along the cantonal boundary.
