Locarno–Madonna del Sasso funicular, Historic funicular railway in Orselina, Switzerland.
The Locarno-Madonna del Sasso funicular connects Locarno with Orselina on a single-track system featuring steel truss bridges and an eleven-arch stone viaduct. The route follows the Ramogna stream and climbs about 400 meters (1,300 feet) in elevation.
The funicular opened in 1906 and has kept its original route along the Ramogna stream. It has transported visitors to the sanctuary for more than a century and continues to serve the local community as a connection to Orselina.
The stations display architectural styles from different periods, with the lower terminal anchored to a 19th-century building complex. The upper station stands near the Madonna del Sasso sanctuary, a significant pilgrimage site for the region.
The funicular runs regularly between the two stations and provides good access for visitors. Wear sturdy footwear and bring water if you plan to hike further around Orselina after your ride.
The funicular uses a counterweight system where one cabin ascends while the other descends simultaneously. This ingenious balance mechanism keeps the system running with minimal energy consumption.
