Castello Visconteo, Lowland castle in Locarno, Switzerland
Castello Visconteo is a medieval lowland castle at the edge of the old town of Locarno, in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Only a portion of the original structure still stands, and that remaining section now houses an archaeological museum.
The castle was first built in the early medieval period and came under the control of the Visconti family from Milan in the 14th century, who used it as an administrative base in the region. In the 15th century, French and later Swiss forces took it over and destroyed much of the original structure.
The museum inside the castle displays objects from the Bronze Age through the medieval period, giving a sense of how people lived in this area long before the current walls were built. The rooms are set within the surviving sections of the building, which you can walk through at a comfortable pace.
The castle sits right in the old town of Locarno and is easy to reach on foot from the main square. Opening hours can be limited outside summer, so it is worth checking before you visit.
Although the castle is now known for its medieval appearance, the finds inside the museum show that the site was already occupied in the Bronze Age. This makes it one of the oldest documented settlement sites in the region.
