Sant'Antonio Abate Parish Church, church building in Ticino, Switzerland

Sant'Antonio Abate Parish Church is a baroque place of worship in Locarno that stands on the central Piazza Sant'Antonio with elaborate facade details and artistic ornaments. Inside, tall windows flood the space with light, colorful marble altars line the walls, and the ceiling rises high above visitors in an open, flowing design.

An original church existed at this location from the 14th century, but it was replaced by a new building whose construction began in 1664 and was completed in 1692. During construction, the choir and two side chapels were blessed in 1682, and in 1685 relics from Rome arrived, adding special meaning to the church.

The church is named after Saint Anthony and sits on Piazza Sant'Antonio, the central square of Locarno. It remains a gathering place for locals and a visible sign of faith in the community, where people continue to celebrate religious occasions and mark important moments together.

The church sits centrally on Piazza Sant'Antonio and is easily reached on foot, with worn stone steps at the entrance polished smooth over generations. Visitors should wear respectful clothing and remember that the building is actively used for worship, so quiet behavior and mindfulness are important during a visit.

The bell tower was raised twice after its original construction, once in the 1730s and again in the 1760s, giving it its distinctive profile over time. Inside, a late Gothic statue of Our Lady of Grace sits tucked in a side chapel, easily missed by visitors rushing through.
