Planggenstock, Mountain summit in Glarus, Switzerland
Planggenstock is a mountain summit in the Swiss canton of Glarus, standing at about 1675 meters in elevation. It features steep flanks and a pronounced ridge that extends toward the neighboring Hirzli peak.
The mountain served for generations as a key passage where farmers moved livestock between valley pastures and alpine meadows. These historic grazing routes shaped the terrain and formed the foundation for today's hiking trails.
The paths around the summit have long connected communities across the region. Visitors today walk the same routes that locals still use to move between the different slopes and valleys.
Access to the mountain is provided by the Niederurnen-Morgenholz cable car, which operates daily and significantly reduces the initial climb. The route to the summit is fairly direct in good conditions, though rain or snow can make it more demanding.
During autumn and winter, the summit often rises above a thick layer of fog that blankets the Linth plain below, creating a striking weather inversion effect. From above, only the highest peaks of neighboring mountains protrude through this sea of cloud.
